PROPAGATION OF PLANTS IN HORTICULTURE 


Propagation, the controlled perpetuation of plants, is that the most elementary horticultural practice.Its two objectives are to obtain an increase in the number and to preserve the essential characteristics of the plant. Plant propagation in horticulture can be achieved sexually by seed or asexually using the plant's specialized vegetative structures (tubers and bulbs) or by employing techniques such as cutting, layering, grafting and tissue culture. Plant propagation can also refer to the dispersal of natural or artificial seeds.

 ADVANTAGES OF THE PROPGATION OF LEARNING PLANTS 


It's a great skill to have because you can create lots of new plants for your garden instead of having to buy them from a nursery (saving money). It is also good to propagate the plants and give them to friends and family. Plant propagation also gives you great satisfaction in knowing that you have been involved in creating those plants, which is probably one of the most rewarding aspects of gardening. Many specialty plants are hard to find in nurseries, so the only way to get more is to propagate them. 


TYPES OF COVERING SEXUAL PROPAGATION


 Sexual propagation is propagation by seed or spores. The plants will fertilize and produce the seed which will become a new one with the two characteristics of the mother plants. Sexual propagation also includes spore growth. Spores are small, dust-like seeds that grow on sporophytes, plants that produce spores as a means of reproduction. A common sporophyte is the fern. The spores grow on the underside of the leaves and then disperse when ready. The spores are propagated by taking a fern leaf, gently scraping the spores, letting them dry, and then planting.

 In self-pollinated plants, the sperm nuclei in pollen produced by a flower fertilize egg cells of a flower on an equivalent plant. Propagation by seed is additionally used widely for several cross-pollinated plants (those whose pollen is carried from one plant to another). Seed is typically the smallest amount expensive and sometimes the sole means of propagation and offers a convenient thanks to store plants over long periods of your time. Seed kept dry and funky normally maintains its viability from harvest to subsequent planting season. Some are often stored for years under suitable conditions. Potatoes, for instance, don't breed true from seed and don't produce large tubers the primary year. These disadvantages are overcome by vegetative propagation. 


 Advantage of sexual propagtion


1. It may be quicker and more economical than asexual propagation.

2. It may result in new cultivars and vigorous hybrids.

3. For some plants, it may be the only means of propagation.

4. It provides a way to avoid transmission of particular diseases, such as viruses.

5. It maintains genetic variation, which increases the potential for plants to adapt to environmental pressure.

Asexual or vegetative reproduction is predicated on the power of plants to regenerate tissues and parts. In many plants vegetative propagation may be a completely natural process; in others it's a man-made one. Vegetative propagation has many advantages. These include the unchanged perpetuation of naturally cross-pollinated or heterozygous plants and therefore the possibility of propagating seedless progeny. this suggests that a superior plant could also be reproduced endlessly without variation. additionally, vegetative propagation could also be easier and faster than seed propagation, because seed dormancy problems are eliminated and therefore the juvenile nonflowering stage of some seed-propagated plants is eliminated or reduced.

Advantage of vegetative propagation


1. it's going to be easier and faster than sexual propagation for a few species.

3. Maintains the juvenile or adult characteristics of some cultivars.

4. Allows the propagation of special types of growth, such as weeping or drooping forms.

5. It can result more quickly in a large plant (compared to a propagated by seed).



HEATED SPREADER




A heated propagator is a horticultural device for maintaining a warm, humid environment for growing seeds and cuttings.




This can be in the form of a closed clear container placed on a hotpad, or even a portable heater pointed at the container. The key is to keep the moisture in the clear container, while still keeping the lighting on top, usually.




SEED PROPAGATION MAT




An electric seed propagation mat is a heated rubber mat covered with a metal cage that is used in landscaping. The mats are made so that the pots containing the seedlings can be placed over the metal cage without the risk of starting a fire. In extreme cold conditions, gardeners place a loose plastic cover over the pots / mats creating a kind of miniature greenhouse.
