Scientific name- Eugenia caryophyllus


♢  Family- Myrtaceae


♢ Clove is one of the most important tree spice crops grown in India.


♢ Second most important spice in world trade after black pepper. 


♢ origin - indonesia 


♢ Second largest consumer (India) in the world.


  ♢ It's a kind of tree. 


  ♢ The cheap part of the nail is THE FULLY CULTIVATED NON OPEN FLOWER BUD. 


  ♢ Clove oil consists of eugenol (80-90%) and is used for the formation of artificial vanilla.


   ♢ Medium sized evergreen tree with straight trunk. 


   ♢ The leaves are simple, opposite, constipated, hairless and aromatic due to the abundance of sebaceous glands on the lower surface. 


   ♢ The new leaves appear red and are bright pink. 


   ♢ It is a hermaphrodite flower.
  
♢ IMPORTANT POINTS: - IF THE BUDS ARE UNPLUCKED, THE FLOWER DEVELOPS AFTER FERTILIZATION IN THE FLESH, SPRAY AN OVAL FRUIT WITH SEEDS KNOWN AS THE MOTHER OF THE CLOVE.

♢ Prefer annual rainfall - 1500-2000 mm. 


♢ Relative humidity is 70% or more.


♢ Cloves grow well in hot, humid climates. 


♢ Grows well from sea level at an altitude of 800-900m. 


♢ Clove is a strictly tropical plant and requires a humid warm 
climate with a temperature of 20-30 degrees Celsius. 

♢ The rainfall required for the cultivation of cloves is between 150 and 250 cm. 


♢ Variable soil type requires it to be BLACK SOIL, LATERITE SOIL, CLAY SOIL, RICH BLACK SOIL. 


♢ IMPORTANT POINTS: -SANDY SOIL IS NOT SUITABLE. 


♢ PH should be between 4.0 and 5.0. 


♢ Propagation through the seed called clove stalk.


♢ Large seeds generally give a higher percentage of germination..


NOTES:- VIABILITY OF SEED IS 1 WEEK.

♢ Transplanting: beginning of the rainy season. 


♢ The clove planting distance is 6 * 6m. 


♢ Dry leaves or cut weeds are used to cover the base of the plant. 


♢ The plot must be kept free of weeds by regular weeding. 


♢ Coconut, nutmeg, nutmeg and clove plantain consociated cutout. 


♢ In the hills, mixed with pepper or coffee. 


♢ The clove tree starts producing in the seventh to eight years after planting in Indian conditions and the full production stage is reached after about 15-20 years. 


♢ Where, as in the Moluccas, it takes 6 to 8 years. 


♢ In Zanzibar it takes 4-6 years. 


♢ About 11000-15000 dried cloves make a kilogram. 


♢ PENANG nails are considered to be of the best quality and followed by ZANZIBER and MADAGASCAR.


 ♢ IMPORTANT NOTES: - IT IS NOT CONSIDERED A TRUE VARIETY OF CLOVE.

  ♢ The buds are harvested when they are dull red or green. 

  

  ♢ Crops are generally ready for harvest from FEBRUARY TO MAY in Indian conditions. 

  

  ♢ KHOKER cloves are cloves that have been fermented due to improper drying, are recognized by their light brown color and whitish fleshy appearance.

  

   ♢ HEADLESS nails are the nails without the unopened ball shaped cocoon on top. 

   

   ♢ CLOVE FRUITS are actually the fruits of cloves that are produced following the fermentation of the open flower buds. 

   

   ♢ The average clove yield is around 2kg per tree per year.

CURING: - The correct drying phase is reached when the stem of the buds is dark brown and the buds are lighter brown. 


GRADING: - Whole cloves are classified as special (handpicked), grade 2, grade 3, ground (powder) clove. 


♢ VALUE ADDED PRODUCTS: - Ground clove oil, oleoresins, clove oil, clove oil, clove mother oil and clove root oil.

 ▪ SUMATRA DISEASE (Ralstonia syzgii) 

 

PEST: - 

▪ STEM BLANKER (Sahydrassus malabaricus) 

▪ BLACK SCALE (Saisseatia nigra)
